Trout Fishing Season 2021.

Just putting the finishing touches to my fly selection for this years trout season, I haven't really been doing alot of writing on this blog over the last year or so but that ends this year. The salmon fishing is going to be hard this year not from a fishing point of view but mainly getting access to my fishing spot and brown tag regulations. The rivers are in full flood at the moment and unfortunately with so much rain and snow due over the coming days its going to be hard to find a spot within my 5km area thats not flooded out. On one of my short walks by the river recently I did spy the odd trout rising for dries, even in the high water the few back eddies and calm areas off the main current had small hatches of fly and trout were feeding there. Time was the main factor, it was mainly late in the evening just before last light. Having had some great sport over the last few years mainly on dries I have developed some nice generic patterns that cover most of the natural hatches mainly in profile not necessairly in colour. Also the attention to detail regarding preparing the dry fly with floatant and even making my own fullers earth because I wasn't happy with the products out there have definitely increased my success rate and hook ups.Having caught big trout and salmon over the last few years my attention has turned to size and fishing dries in size 18 and 20 barbless works very well for me. I have a few videos on youtube that I will attach to this blog soon showing me catching both salmon and trout on small dries and also this year I will be using klink and dink, czech nymphing, spiders and also streamers to catch some cracking trout. There are a few rivers that I would like to hit this year for trout namely the Blackwater, Suir,Bandon,Lee, Sullane and the Laune to see if my methods and flies score well there. Hopefully I can get out for an hour on opening day for a cast and it will be dries that I'm going to try regardless of water height or weather. I have a small tidy 4wt 8ft dry fly rod ideal for fishing in small areas that will allow me to poke a fly into some very hard to access areas but that's the nature of things , wild fishing isn't easy and catching is harder. I will hopefully have a report for the coming opening day 15th of February ...stay tuned..

  1. Best of luck in 2021. Similar to your self I have been out in my local river. Got a kelt on opening day. Have seen trout rises more frequently since the days have warmed up. Mainly in the evening also. Will try a few new methods to me this year and see what happens.

  2. Well day one was a bust, extremely high dirty water with really bad winds but at least I was out. Didn't try the dries too much cold wind no rises but water clarity was a big issue.
