Monster Trout Video

I have just started filming my new video on monster trout fishing at night and trust me it is going to be amazing. Already i have caught a personal best in the mid teens and i hope to increase that by the time i have finished the video. The constant high water has made it impossible to get access to some of my favourite places but it has brought some of the big trout out of their hiding areas to feed. The big trout i caught had a mouth on him that would swallow a two pound trout whole so i can see how they put on so much weight so quickly having switched from flies to bait fish like parr, smolt, perch and minnow. Having to only hunt once per day for a big meal conserves energy and this is what makes a really big fish, ( high protein diet plus plenty of rest equals monsters ). I will put up a preview soon on youtube to show some of the big trout and how i catch them.

Fly Fishing for Monster Trout at Night

Here are some photo's of large wild brown trout that i catch while fly fishing at night. Everything that you know about fly fishing can be thrown away because this type of fishing has more in common with bass fly fishing due to the size of the flies and tactics. I would never fish with anything less than 12lbs flurocarbon at night and a forty plus fly line cut back about two feet to get rid of the presentation tip because you will be throwing really heavy flies and the tip will give you  kick backs and will make it impossible to throw the big flies. I also use salmon tapered leaders to lift the flies and a double haul casting stroke to power the flies across the river. One has to recce the river in daylight hours and mark your casting distance in order to cover the entire river without getting caught up in branches and rocks in the dark. Under arm casting is a must and that can be achieved with the forty plus lines due to their spey profiles and if possible a switch rod, ( looks like a small double hand salmon rod ) these rods are becoming popular and i use a 6 weight T&T switch rod for summer salmon and big brownies.
